ITT-370: 802.11 Case Studies
In this assignment, students will explore the standards of 802.11, what the benefits are for having these standards, and why these standards are important. The 802.11 standards will be viewed from the perspective of the student’s assigned business/institution. Find your assigned business below and complete the assignment according to the instructions.
Case study: A Bank has hired you to install a new wireless network. The company currently has a wireless network that is a few years old. The problem with the current wireless network is that it was built using proprietary standards instead of 802.11. This current wireless network does not have an upgrade path to 802.11.
On the new wireless network, the bank wants a system that allows the greeters to use iPads to enter customer information for those that walk in wanting to meet with a banking specialist. The information entered into the iPad will be sent to the correct banking associate to let them know that a customer would like to meet with them. This information will also be used for marketing purposes. The bank has four different locations that will need to be connected together in case the customer visits another branch.
In each of these branches, the greeters will have wireless IP phones that will be used to answer questions when customers call, as well as route customer calls to the correct associate.
Directions: Looking at the current wireless network and what the Bank would like to accomplish with the new network, explain to the Bank why the current wireless network will have to be replaced before you can begin the project. The Chief Information Officer (CIO) has asked you to come up with a plan to implement this new wireless network. Include in your report:
1.A brief description of the problem with the current wireless network
2.The benefits of global/industry standards vs. proprietary standards
3.What types of problems exist with mixed standards
4.A plan to correct the problems with the current wireless network

PROJECT SCOPE – Part 1
FEASIBILITY STUDY – Part 1
Objectives of the Network:
1. Secure Service – What is the main objective of this network?
2. Integration and Updates –What needs to be done to get the current network up-to-date?
3. Versatile Information Process –What does the network need to be able to do? For example, applications, devices, computers, laptops, etc.
4. Collaboration – How will the network be used to collaborate with other offices? Other users in a different location?
5. Scalability – How will the network be able to adapt to change?
Intended Users –What type of mobility requirements, client device requirements, and signal coverage requirements are needed?
Design Assumptions – State the assumptions for unknown factors that could affect the project.
Equipment Needs and Proposed Budget
NETWORK NEEDS ANALYSIS – Part 2
Data Types – What types of data will be served by the network? For example, reports.
Data Sources – How will the data be used? For example, will it need to go into a database and be accessed by an end user?
Number of Users that will need to be supported
Speed Requirements – What type of expectations do you think the users will expect from the network? What would be the throughput to meet these expectations?
Load Variation Estimates –How much load do you think the network will be using?
QoS REQUIREMENTS – Part 4
QoS Requirements – QoS requirements for phones, video, etc.
RELIABILITY AND SECURITY REQUIREMENTS – Part 5
Reliability Requirements – What do users expect of the network?
Security Requirements – According to the government requirements, what type of security will need to be put into place?
NETWORK DESIGN – Part 5
Include any diagrams that explain the wireless network. You may have multiple diagrams—1 for each set of users, depending on your assigned business (Administrators, Doctors, Construction Workers, Tellers, Guests, etc.). Include security appliances into the network design and ensure they are connected to the appropriate devices.

ITT-370: Designing a Wireless Network Part 1
This assignment will begin the Designing a Wireless Network project that continues through the duration of the course. Recall the case study for your assigned business/institution. In this assignment, you will begin developing the Design Document that will list all the aspects of the project and what would need to be done to implement the new wireless network for your assigned company.

Directions: Using the “Design Document Template,” enter the information for the “Project Scope” and “Feasibility Study” sections. Include:
1.The scope of the project
2.Objectives of the network
5.Equipment needs and proposed budget
The Feasibility Study should cover this project at a high level. Consider the following questions when completing this section of the Design Document:
1.What are all the different needs of the project that should be considered at this stage of design?
2.What are the different types of users that need different levels of access?
3.What type of equipment does the company already have?
4.What is the projected budget for the project?
