In some cases, researchers opt for a mixed methods approach. This approach combines the strengths of both the qualitative and quantitative designs. Thus, the researcher is now capable of collecting both the qualitative and quantitative data from a single study. Take for example someone dealing with the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The researcher can use the quantitative approach to collect numerical information on this problem. Sometimes, numbers do not present the entire picture. Hence, the qualitative elements come in. Through the qualitative design, the researcher can gather information on patients experiences with CAUTIs or what the nurses believe contributed to this problem. Thus, in the end, you have a more detailed report of the situation and results that can be easily implemented.
