New York Institute of Technology-Manhattan Campus Statistics Worksheet
Data Analysis using StatisticsYou will solve the problems that follow using an appropriate spreadsheet or other data analysis
tool (e.g., R). There are approximately 17 primary problems (each with its own data set) of
which each has 2-4 sub-problems. A seed file is provided for your convenience.
•
Document your solutions in report format.
•
Create an appropriate Title Page.
•
Start each new Primary Problem on a new page. Label it carefully.
•
Includes ‘signature’ screen shots for each problem. One screen shot should show the
overall worksheet. Other screen shots should show how the sub-problems were
calculated.
•
At the end of each problem, copy-and-paste the specific sub-problem question and
immediately follow it with the answer you’ve calculated. Use the INSERT-SHAPE to
put a box around your answer (as shown in the example below).
Example:
Problem: Compute the mean, median, P30, P60, P90, Q1, Q3, range, and interquartile range on
these data.
Answers:
Mean = 12.97
Note how both the specific problem and
the corresponding answers are shown. A
box is used to highlight the answers!
Median = 12.7
P30 = ….
•
You should compile all of the solutions into a SINGLE .docx file for submission. I will
only grade a single file (the first one submitted). Please don’t submit each problem as an
individual file.
Problem #5: Top 100 Movie Box Office
If you Google “Top 100 Movie Box Office, Domestic, All-Time” you can find sites containing
box office movie data. About the fourth link or so should be the All Time DOMESTIC box
office results as reported by the-numbers.com
If your search result does not pull up the page, here is a direct link:
https://www.the-numbers.com/box-office-records/domestic/all-movies/cumulative/all-time
Make sure you are viewing the page showing the ranking of All Time Domestic Box Office (not
All Time Worldwide Box Office).
Confirm Domestic
Copy the Box Office Data from the Browser to your Spreadsheet
Highlight the column headings (Rank, Year, Movie, Distributer, Domestic Box Office,
International Box Office, Worldwide Box Office) and the top 100 data records, and then copyand-paste the data values into Excel. (There are multiple paste options, and the “match
destination formatting” should give good results.)
Resize the columns appropriately and the first 10 data rows of your spreadsheet will
look something like this:
Use the =COUNTIF function to count the totals for the Top 6 Studios.
[HWQ9] Among Top 6 Distributors, what percentage of Top 100 movies are Disney movies?
Then use the =SUMIF function to get the Domestic Totals for the Top 6 Studios.
[HWQ10] Consider the accumulated revenue for each of the Top 6 Studios. What percentage of
revenue generated by the Top 6 studios did Disney generate?
[CHARTS] Create pie or doughnut charts of your choosing to show the percentages of Top 100
movies among the Top 6 Distributors and the percentages of Domestic Gross Totals among the
Top 6 Distributors.
Your charts do not have to look exactly like the images below. Choose any pie or doughnut chart
style you like. Choose if you want to show the legend or not, and if so, where you want the legend to
appear. You can choose to show the percentages on your chart or not.

Problem #8: Is the Stock at a Fair Value?
The following data show Morningstar’s Fair Value estimate and the Share Price for 28 companies.

spent on television advertising and $1800 is spent on newspaper advertising?
Problem #14: Baseball
In baseball, a team’s success is often thought to be a function of the team’s hitting and pitching
performance. One measure of hitting performance is the number of home-runs the team hits, and
one measure of pitching performance is the earned run average for the team’s pitching staff. It is
generally believed that teams that hit more home runs and have a lower earned run average will
win a higher percentage of the games played. The following data show the proportion of games
won, the number of team home runs (HR), and the earned run average (ERA) for the 16 teams in

[HWQ32] Determine the estimated regression equation that could be used to predict the
proportion of games won given the number of team home runs and the earned run average
for the team’s pitching staff.
[HWQ33] Last season San Diego won only 39.5% of the games they played, the lowest
in the National League. To improve next year’s record, the team tried to acquire new
players who would increase the number of team home runs to 180 and decrease the
earned run average for the team’s pitching staff to 4.0. Use the estimated regression
equation developed in part (c) to estimate the percentage of games San Diego will win
if they have 180 team home runs and have an earned run average of 4.0.
Problem #15: PC World Computer Reviews
PC World rated four component characteristics for 10 ultraportable laptop computers: features;
performance; design; and price. Each characteristic was rated using a 0–100 point scale. An overall

computers.

Problem #16: Waterskiing Data Analysis
Waterskiing and wakeboarding are two popular water-sports. Finding a model that best suits your
intended needs, whether it is waterskiing, wakeboarding, or general boating, can be a difficult task.
Waterski magazine did extensive testing for 88 boats and provided a wide variety of information to
help consumers select the best boat. A portion of the data they reported for 20 boats with a length of
between 20 and 22 feet follows. Beam is the maximum width of the boat in inches, HP is the
horsepower of the boat’s engine, and Top Speed is the top speed in miles per hour (mph).

Problem #17: Basketball Data Predictions

these statistics are the proportion of games won (PCT), the proportion of field goals made by
the team (FG%), the proportion of three-point shots made by the team’s opponent (Opp 3

(Opp TO). The following data show the values of these statistics for the 29 teams in the NBA
