Review and Re-Review the course materials relevant to Race & Ethnicity, expanding our knowledge of
others and their worlds, and guaging the level of the playing field in Bucher (and Sernau text/ chapter).
Create an original powerpoint presentation that discusses the contemporary social issues outlined
regarding race and ethnicity. You must factor in the PBS Documentary “We shall remain” and the article
“Invention of Thanksgiving” by Siskind. On Thursday of this week we will and HBO Sports to the
assignment.
A minimum of original and creative powerpoint slides with no more than 13 presentation slides please;
slide 1 must be title page & final slide is for your references/ bibliography.
THE QUESTION:
Considering the genocide committed upon Native Americans, the stereotypical images of the “Indian”
that is a fixture in the US media, their virtual exclusion from the history books in schools. and their
socio-economic status of poverty to date, are Native American team mascots in American Schools and
Sports teams honoring Native American Peoples?
Or, do such logos and mascots further the vicious cycle of prejudice and discrimination against them as
does say confederate flags and stereotypical images of blacks, Latinos and women that are extant in
American media and society? What do you think?
Lastly, according to our course material, who are Billy Mills and Charlene Teeters? What others folks
are highlighted and why? Will they win this battle? Why or Why not?
According to Siskind, what really occurred that gave rise to the current myth of that first “thanksgiving” in
US society. Is her argument compelling why or why not?
Lastly, you must use a current source (beyond those provided in the canvas module/ one that you locate
and include) to bring the discussion current. This article that you will choose must be current 2020,
2021, 2022 and use it to support your ideas, concerns, or views for how to resolve this contemporary
social issue.
NOTE: Cover page/ slide and Reference page/ slide are needed, but do not count towards the max
of 15 slide

your syllabus.
Be Clear, be original and be creative and do not write essay paper and paste it across multiple PPT
slides.
Include evidence from our source materials (Bucher and Sernau textbook, thanksgiving article by
Siskind, and documentary Dishonorable Mention, and at least 2 outside scholarly article or credible
written news source) to support your arguments… discussing contemporary issues such as Native
americans and Covid 19, Alcohol on reservtions, Income disparity at present, Columbus Statues,
Confederate Statues and Name Changes of schools, Universities, buildings and/ or military bases and
sports teams will all require outside sources so again, properly reference your answers/ sources within
the presentation and at the end of your CREATIVE powerpoint presentation include in your bibliography/
reference list.
